FAQS: GOD JOBS

❧ what can I expect if my character accepts a job from the gods?
While the actual semantics of each god job will differ, with some requiring more manpower hours than others (scouting, for example, is more intensive than acting on the advising council most of the time), there are some common threads that you can expect throughout each god job:
- Each god job will have a post on the god's respective journal, which is used as an OOC reservoir for job-relevant goings-ons throughout the month, such as discussion of ongoing research projects in Odin's and Mimir's different academic groups, or working out what was discovered by Honir's scouts in a given month.
- Each month, a summary of what has been accomplished, discovered, and/or developed by the various vocations in the last month will be included in the Bulletin.
- Some of the quests in our upcoming quest mechanic will be partially job-specific - for example, they might require a scout, an ambassador, or a medic to maximize the potential for success. You can take the quest without adhering to those guidelines, but you may not get the full reward that you otherwise might have gotten!
- Throughout each month, many of the events or happenings will be fuelled by discoveries or developments made by the god vocations in prior months.
❧ is my character required to have one of these jobs?
Nope! Consider it a helpful extracurricular to pad out their daily lives (and also occasionally to discover Actual Plot).
❧ can my character sign up for more than one job?
Absolutely! We currently limit each character to two god vocations in order to realistically estimate the level of IC commitment each one requires.
❧ is there any obligation to work for your patron god?
Definitely not! Your character can join whichever jobs they'd ICly prefer to take part in. That being said, joining your own god's vocation does come with perks - it synergizes nicely when you're asked to describe how your character has interacted with the tenets of their god's domain on your second- and third-tier magic applications, as an example! It also means that boons distributed in the line of occupational duty are a bit more potent, as boons from your own patron god are always going to be a little bit stronger than boons from another.
❧ what benefits does my character receive for participating?
These positions are intended by the gods to be fully volunteer-based... But that doesn't mean there aren't perks! One of the simplest ways to earn a god boon is to show that it's instrumental to the Wanderer's line of work. For example, if a scout is exploring a section of forest with an unusually high number of touch-based toxic plants, the god might provide a ring with one free weekly use of 'Protection from Poison' just in case. Or perhaps one of Odin's vanguards is close to a breakthrough - simply letting Odin know of this might be enough to earn a necklace that, when touched, refreshes the mind and body as if you've slept (with a limited number of charges, of course) to maximize productivity.
❧ how does my character sign up (icly & oocly)?
OOCly, you just copypaste the form at the top of the God Jobs page and fill it out in a comment. This will get your character listed under the job they're signed up for, with an approximate estimation of their job title.
ICly, the gods have posted listings on notice boards throughout the various districts, as well as on the network via what amounts to a pop-up ad the next time your character uses their cuffs. Clicking 'sign me up!' on the network ad or signing their name in the relevant section on one of the paper ads (with the pen magically floating adjacent) is all it takes to join.
❧ what is the role of these jobs in the grand scheme of things?
Aside from giving the Wanderers more agency to participate in the actual workings of Asgard, it legitimately strengthens Asgard as a whole (and thus, too, the gods who built it). This strength comes in three different ways:
- Logistical/practical innovation -
More minds in Odin's or Mimir's academics groups mean that more is actively discovered about the world they live in, for example, and more Wanderers joining Sigyn's crew will quickly diversify and strengthen the breadth of what is and isn't available to eat (trivia: Did you know that not a single person has introduced the gods to the concept of a kiwi?). Each god job is designed to contribute to Asgard in some entirely practical, non-magical way, and to strengthen it by those means. - Conservation -
Through participating in god jobs, Wanderers are beginning to take on many tasks that the gods were otherwise spending their magic on - magic that in actuality is quite a bit more finite than the gods have thus far let on, though it's hardly at risk of actually running out. Nonetheless, allowing the gods to spend less magic on such things as food production, putting up wards to protect Asgard in lieu of actual sentries, etc. functionally allows their magic to rest, and through that rest, genuinely start to recover from the creation of Asgard nearly a year ago. - Magic -
On top of all of the above, Asgard is in large part a city fueled by intent. Each time that a Wanderer acts in the name of their god, of any god, or of Asgard itself, the force of their will and intent radiates (unseen and unfelt by anyone but the gods and Yggdrasil itself) and feeds directly into the collective latent magic of the city. This, too, strengthens the gods - not to mention provides a massive reservoir of magic for the gods to tap into in a crisis, if absolutely necessary.
